Examples of our work

We undertake research and develop, pilot and scale interventions to prevent litter, reduce waste and improve local places. Our work is carried out in partnership with a wide range of public, private and academic organisations.

Smoking Zones

Our innovative Smoking Zones intervention was designed to nudge smokers to do the right thing. In our pilots areas smoking litter was reduced by up to 89%.

Understanding provision, usage and perceptions of free drinking water to the public in the UK

Our research carried out in partnership with BRITA sought to better understand the triggers and barriers to members of the public using reusable water bottles as an alternative to single-use plastic water bottles. Our findings received over 200 pieces of media coverage including a Times leader, to a total circulation of over 55 million.

We’re Watching You

Our glow-in-the-dark We’re Watching You intervention was tested with 17 local authority partners on over 100 sites and found that the approach was highly effective in reducing dog fouling at both the target sites and displacement sites by 46% on average. The intervention has won a number of awards and is now being used by over 160 land managers across the country.

Beacons of Litter

Previous research has suggested that people are more likely to litter where litter is present. Our research tested whether certain types of litter – larger, brighter and often branded items, such as takeaway containers and plastic bags – act as ‘beacons of litter’ by attracting greater rates of littering. Our findings were published in inaugural the Journal of Litter and Environmental Quality.
